Amerigo provides English language learning and other means of support during the school day and in the evening to ensure student development and progression. The English Language Learning Associate collaborates to bridge learning strategies between our staff, our partnered schools and most importantly, our students.

     

    Overview

    The English Language Learning Associate (ELLA) will work 20-25 hours per week in the afternoons and evenings to deliver English language development instruction to diverse international high school students living in a dormitory environment and attending a local private school. The ELLA will work with a senior English Language Learning Coordinator (ELLC) and the partner high school to develop and implement a supplemental program that promotes student achievement, accelerates acculturation into American culture, and offers a high level of individualized service.

    Responsibilities & Qualifications

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Establish and maintain an appropriate plan of ELL instruction for all students
    • Oversee and review progress toward goals with students on a regular basis
    • Administer English language proficiency assessments throughout the year to monitor progress and share results with partner school staff
    • Enact intervention strategies as directed by the ELLC
    • Create appropriate learning environment: stimulating, active, safe, respectful, project-based, etc.
    • Be available for proficiency interventions during evening academic study hours
    • Enact appropriate writing support for English and other classes as directed by ELLC
    • Help students use a variety of technology strategies to support their learning and ensure students are proficient in navigating the systems of partner schools
    • Utilize the Amerigo Learning Management System and support students in the development of portfolios

     

    SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES

    • ELLA may have opportunities to accompany students on acculturation trips or vacation activities

     

    KEY QUALIFICATIONS

    The successful candidate will be an entrepreneurial, energetic leader with a love of working with

    adolescents from different cultures and with different learning styles. This person will be organized

    and have excellent written and oral communication skills. This person must be resilient and reliable

    while demonstrating an ability to build a strong community culture within a global environment.

    Success in this role will be demonstrated by:

    • Establishing a nurturing and trusting relationships with students
    • Aligning oneself around a set of organizational values and standards
    • Developing collaborative relationships with Amerigo colleagues
    • Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in TESOL, education, or other related discipline
    • Acceptable, 3rd or 4th year student working toward BA in TESOL, education, or related discipline
    • Willingness to work evenings and some weekends.
    • International, multi-cultural exposure, experience working with English as a Second Language students, classroom management training a plus.
    • Working knowledge of one other language would be beneficial due to the nature of the work. Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Spanish, Russian, or Portuguese language abilities preferred.
